ATEX approved torque transducer meets needs in potentially explosive atmospheres

HBM has gained ATEX approval for its T10FH torque flanges making them suitable for applications such as controlling gas engines on gas compressor systems.

A torque transducer is integrated directly in the drive train between the drive and the machine to precisely determine the machine’s performance. To make the transducer suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, the electronics were appropriately modified and adapted.

The modified T10FH transducer is now available with ATEX approval ll 2G EEx d e q IIC T4. It has a nominal (rated) measuring range of up to 150 kNm and can be used in Zone 1.

The data transmission between the rotor and the stator is digital, so that secure, error-free measured value acquisition and transmission is possible even under difficult ambient conditions, for example electromagnetic interference or fluctuating temperatures.

A typical application for the T10FH-ATEX torque transducer is to control gas engines for gas compressor systems. These are used, for example, in the compressor stations of gas pipelines or subterranean gas caverns.

Rapid and accurate regulation of the engine is essential as the pressure in the pipeline frequently fluctuates because of changing operating parameters. The T10FH-ATEX torque transducer effectively protects the drive against damage. Fuel consumption is also reduced.

The high torque measurement accuracy can be used to acquire the system status data and to ensure optimized maintenance intervals as part of a condition-based monitoring program.

HBM also provides non-ATEX approved T10FH torque flanges with nominal (rated) torques of up to 300 kNm.
