Miniature Crash Sensor for Auto Safety Applications.

Measurement Specialties’ new miniature Model 52 accelerometer for auto safety applications offers significant cost savings, ease of use and reliable measurements for test professionals. This low profile sensor was specifically designed for use in space-restricted environments where mounting options are limited and sensor cable access problematic.

The Model 52 is adhesively secured to the test surface. The flexible, 360 inch, 4 conductor cable easily winds through channels and obstructions to instrumentation and power supply. The low cost of the Model 52 compared with existing sensing alternatives in the marketplace makes it the unit of choice for side impact crash tests where the sensor is at most risk of being damaged and needs to be regarded as disposable.

Operating from 2 to 10 Vdc, the Model 52 is available in ranges from 50 to 2000 g. Depending on range, frequency response flat to 7,000 Hz is available. This 4-arm Wheatstone Bridge device is less than 0.4 inches in length and 0.15 inches in height. It offers an operating temperature range of -40° to 85°C and linearity of ± 1%.

The underlying MEMS technology and the innovative design for this sensor stems from Measurement Specialties’ research and vibration design facilities in Fremont and Aliso Viejo California.
