PCB Piezotronics introduces new smaller triax mems sensor for road load data acquisition applications

PCB Piezotronics, a world leader in vibration, acoustic, pressure, force and torque sensors, has introduced a new triaxial Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensor for use in road load data (RLD) applications that is significantly smaller than the previous generation device.

The new series 3713B accelerometer measures just 20.3mm cubed and offers DC response for measuring low frequency vibration and motion over full scale ranges from ±2 to ±200g. At 62% smaller and 78% lighter than the previous model, the new 3713B is ideal for use in road load tests to measure the transient and steady state inputs of a vehicle as it traverses a road surface in the anticipated region of use or a replicated drive profile on a test track. Road load measurements take into account all projected vehicle and driving parameters such as mass, inertia, air and rolling resistance, road characteristics, engine load and vehicle speed.

The new series 3713B accelerometer features gas-damped silicon MEMS sensing elements for uniform, repeatable performance with protection against high frequency overload. Electrically, the sensor offers a single-ended or differential output signal with power, signal and ground leads for each channel. Supply voltage regulation permits operation from +6 to +30V DC and the low-noise, low-impedance output signal may be transmitted over long cables without degradation.

The new series 3713B triaxial MEMS accelerometer complements PCB Piezotronics' wide range of sensors for use in RLD applications including single- and three-axis force sensors, wheel force transducers and conventional ICP® accelerometers, alongside strain sensors, load cells and signal conditioners.

RLD is one of the best sources of fundamental information necessary for analysis of the design, reliability and structural integrity of vehicle components. The sensors must be accurate but, most importantly, they must be robust and reliable to survive the shock, heat, humidity and contamination associated with various measurement locations on vehicles and the adverse conditions of the road profile.
PCB Piezotronics sensors deliver reliable and accurate results in these demanding environments, meeting and exceeding the requirements of RLD acquisition applications.

All standard PCB sensors and products are supplied with a two-year warranty and the company also offers to all customers, at no charge, 24-hour emergency telephone support. This service makes product and application support available to customers and end-users, day or night, seven days per week.
