LVDTs vital for 'poke-yoke' assembly quality.
RDP Electronics Ltd has recently assisted
Southampton-based B.K. Automation in the
design of a two-station assembly and proofing
machine for a client in the automotive industry.
The machine produces five versions of high-pressure oil pipe
assembly used in turbochargers and relies on highly accurate
measurements to achieve what the Japanese refer to as Poke-Yoke
or to avoid inadvertent mistakes.
The oil pipes pass through various stages of assembly and proofing,
and RDPs D5/100AG gauging LVDT transducers measure bolt
positions and assembly dimensions, ensuring, for example, that
only one washer has been assembled in place, not two.
Outputs from the LVDTS are amplified by RDPs S7AC which
send a 0-10V analogue signal to a PLC preset with pass/fail limits.
Pick and place robotics transfer the assembly between stations
of the machine, rejecting any that dont reach the required standard.
