Multi-channel IR tyre temperature sensor with CANbus
Variohm has launched a new range of 4- and 8-channel IR tyre temperature sensors aimed at motorsport and automotive testing. The CANbus interfaced IRN4C and IRN8C models from Texense provide temperature readings across the width of a tyre or shaft at 4 or 8 points with response times to 260 msec and accuracy within +/-0.1% F.S. up to 200ºC.
The multi-channel sensors can be supplied with front facing or right angled lens exit configurations to suit the installation requirements and can be set up to measure across total widths up to 304 mm for the 4-channel version or 532 mm for the 8-channel sensor. The field of view for each individual lens determines the actual measurement area and by setting the sensor further from the tyre, the target diameter increases. As a practical indication, the maximum distance for the 8-channel version is 700mm for a target diameter of 105 mm. The minimum distance for the 4-channel version is 50 mm and its target diameter is 15 mm.
The CANbus 2.0 interface provides 2 bytes of data per channel with a resolution of 0.1º per bit. Both versions can be supplied in a choice of two temperature ranges; -20°C to + 140°C, or -20°C to + 200°C with a supply voltage between 6 and 16V.
The robust and durable aluminium housing, measuring just 31 x 11 x 17 mm, is designed to endure the most severe condition extremes of motorsport track testing. The tried and tested non-contacting technology has been well proven across the industry for other tyre test sensors and similarly demanding brake and clutch temperature measurement applications across Formula1, MotoGP, WRC, Nascar IRL, Le Mans Series and more.
